Southwest Photography Workshop Topic: Composition

Photo: Antelope Slot Canyon: Arizona

Antelope Slot Canyon, Arizona

Purchase Print

Happy new year to all.  I haven't posted anything in about a week, the holidays have been keeping me busy.  Today's image was taken in upper Antelope Canyon.  This location is one of several slot canyons we visit during our desert tour workshop.

Antelope Canyon, in my humble opinion is all about one thing, composition!  The technical aspects of photographing a slot canyon are easy enough to nail down, i.e. tripod, small aperature, long exposure, meter on brighter portion of the composition.  The composition is a challenge though.  I have been to this canyon several times, and each time I find new compositions and refine the compositions I used prior trips.  Slot canyons are a challenge because it's not obvious what to point your camera at, in the slot you really need to think about arranging the composition.

This image was shot on Nikon D100, Nikkor 24-120 @ 62MM, 3 seconds, F/11 to NEF RAW format.
