Cathedral in the Desert, Lake Powell

Purchase Print

"Man cannot change the great laws of nature; but he can take advantage of them, and use them for his purposes."

- John Wesley Powell

Tucked away in an obscure corner of the Lake that is named after Powell is a little gem called The Cathedral in the Desert.  The sanstone walls have been carved by the water in a manner to create an enormus ampitheater with a very small opening to the outside.  Several hundread yards up the canyon exists another lake and a lush pocket of vegitation resulting for a spring or small stream.  It's very possible that Powell visited this site during his voyage down the Colorado as the location is near the confluence of the Colorado and Escalante.  Powell often favored such camp sites and was known to hike and explore several hours of each day, generally following watersources upstream.

The image was taken on a Nikon Coolpix 5000 with the native lens and no filters.
